Andrea Gabrieli: Sperar non si potea (prima parte of 7) (SSATTB)
A madrigal cycle which forms the centerpiece of the anthology Trionfo di Musica, a tribute to Bianca Capello to which several composers contributed. A member of a prominent Venetian patrician family, Bianca scandalously eloped with a young clerk and fled to Florence, causing much dismay to her family and incurring the displeasure of the Venetian Republic. Eventually she caught the eye of the duke, Francesco de’ Medici, and the two were finally married in 1579. The Venetians, anxious to ensure good relations with Tuscany, now did a complete volte-face, bestowing on Bianca the honorary title of Daughter of the Republic and sending a delegation to the wedding festivities. In all probability, the cycle was performed at that time. (A version transposed down a minor third is also available.)
