MASTER LIST OF COMPOSERS

Below is a list of composers currently represented on this Web site. Clicking on a composer's name will bring up a list of madrigals available to be downloaded. Three downloads are available for each madrigal: Score (in PDF format), MIDI (.mid) and Text/Translation (also in PDF).

All downloads are free of charge; however, you must register with the site in order to download Scores and Texts/Translations.

Note that, in the case of madrigals in multiple sections, the full Text/Translation may be downloaded from the entry for the first section (the prima parte).

NOTE ABOUT MIDI FILES: Mac users are advised that Apple's QuickTime application no longer supports MIDI. However, MIDI files can be played on GarageBand for Mac, as well as on some third-party freeware programs. Alternatively, users can request MP3 files of particular pieces by contacting Martin Morell.

Baci soavi e cari (SS A/T TB)
Masnelli's setting bears comparison to Monteverdi's much better-known version. The triplet figures in bars 12-14 are unusual in secular music of this period. See also the four-voice setting by Costa. The piece has been transposed down a minor third; a version at the original pitch is also available.

A che tormi il ben mio (SSATB)
A concise lover’s complaint, framed (after the fashion of Guarini) as a series of questions to a love-object who remains silent. A version of the text with the same first and last lines and similar affect, but otherwise differently worded, was set by Marenzio and Monteverdi.

Clori vezzosa e snella (SSATB)
Masnelli's treatment of the well-worn pastoral theme of ardent shepherd in vain pursuit of elusive nymph. Giovanni Battista Mosto set a version of the text ("Clori leggiadra e bella," q.v.) which is identical except for the first line.
